About Julia Fox Garrison, Healthcare Keynote Speaker and Patient Advocate

Some of the Greatest Lessons About Healthcare Aren't Learned in Medical School

They're learned one conversation, one diagnosis, and one act of compassion at a time.

Julia Fox Garrison has spent years experiencing healthcare from both sides of the bedrails. As a patient navigating life changing diagnoses and as an advocate working alongside healthcare professionals, she has seen firsthand how small moments of human connection can shape a person’s healing, hope, and trust.

Today, Julia shares those lessons with hospitals, healthcare organizations, and medical conferences across the country, helping audiences strengthen patient experience, improve communication, and reconnect with the purpose behind the work they do every day.

From the Boardroom to the Recovery Room

At 37, Julia was sprinting up the corporate ladder when a massive, paralyzing stroke pulled it out from under her. This was very unusual for her age at the time, which threw potty training her 3-year-old son out the window.

In an instant, she went from leading teams in the boardroom to rebuilding her life in the recovery room. Multiple health crises would follow, including Stage IV stomach cancer, ultimately placing Julia among the one percent of exceptional survivors.

But recovery was never only about medicine. Julia drew on the same skills she had used throughout her corporate career to lead teams, solve problems, and navigate change, this time applying them to herself. She learned to rethink adversity, adapt when the expected became unexpected, and move from Victim (this happened to me), to Survivor (I made it through), to Thriver (I’m stronger and wiser because of it).

Today, that journey shapes the way Julia speaks about resilience. She doesn’t see it as bouncing back or returning to who you were before. It’s about recognizing how an experience has changed you, using what you’ve learned, and finding a way to move forward with purpose, perspective, and, whenever possible, a little humor.

More Than a Survivor

Many people first meet Julia through her story.

They remember the stroke. They remember the cancer. They remember the obstacles she overcame.

Julia hopes they remember something else.

She hopes they remember that every person has a story, every care provider has a purpose, and every interaction has the power to leave someone feeling seen or overlooked.

Her presentations aren’t about looking back or asking, “Why me?” They’re about asking a better question.

How do we move forward?

That question has become the foundation of her work and the mindset she encourages healthcare professionals to bring into every patient interaction, every leadership decision, and every challenge they face.

Helping Healthcare Professionals Rediscover What Matters Most

Julia believes healthcare is at its best when clinical excellence is matched by human connection.

Her keynotes encourage audiences to think differently about communication, compassion, resilience, and the words they choose every day. She reminds teams that patients remember more than treatments. They remember kindness. They remember dignity. They remember how they felt when someone took the time to truly see them. They remember being treated with dignity.

Through stories that are equal parts heartfelt, humorous, and practical, Julia helps audiences leave with ideas they can immediately apply, whether they’re caring for patients, leading teams, or supporting colleagues.

Beyond the Stage

Julia is a nationally recognized healthcare keynote speaker, bestselling HarperCollins author, and patient advocate whose work has been featured by Good Morning America, People Magazine, NPR, BBC World News, ABC News, and many other national media outlets.

She has spoken for hospitals, healthcare associations, rehabilitation organizations, leadership conferences, women’s conferences, businesses, universities & colleges, and continuing education events across the country, always with the same goal: helping people see healthcare through a more human lens.

"As a health care professional for 35+ years, I've seen many presentations but few who weave inspiration with humor and poignant insights that hit the heart and the intellect. Julia is a speaker who can address different audiences with highly relevant messages and be remembered long after her presentation is over."
